40 Horror Movies to Watch in October

I. Love. Horror movies!

Well, kind of.

Before kids, I used to love watching horror movies and they were my absolute favorite. Like I would watch them at night and still sleep like an angel. After I had my first, I got a little soft.

Now watching horror movies makes me nervous sometimes, especially at night. I found that it’s best I watch them early in the day so that I have enough time to β€˜forget’ and get my mind on other things. Weird, huh?

Anyway, I compiled a list of movies I have seen and loved and I would definitely be ok with watching again since I already know the plots. HAHAHAHAHAHA *laughs nervously*

Everybody has Netflix and if you don’t, what do you even watch? First 20 movies are technically not free, but technically kind of yes if you do have Netflix already.Β The other 20 movies are movies that you can rent on YouTube (in case you didn’t know you could do that).

Netflix

Cult of Chucky – Slasher | Rated R

Because there’s no getting rid of this guy! If you’ve been living under a rock, this and all Chucky movies are about a doll whose body has been possessed by a criminal using a voodoo ritual while running from the police and then whose entire purpose of β€˜life’ after becomes to possess a human body. I recommend watching them all!

Death Note – Fantasy | Rated TV-MA

A Netflix original gem! This is a bit on the comedic side so don’t expect it to be horrifying. Anyway, basically without giving it all away, this movie is about aΒ killer notebook. Things escalateΒ pretty fast!

The Boy – Thriller | Rated PG-13

Another doll movie. In this one, a nanny is hired to babysit a doll by a couple who treats the doll as if it were their [dead] son. Doll does move and a bunch of creepy s*** happens.

The Babadook – Thriller | Rated TV-MA

This one gives boogieman vibes. The dude conjures from a book.

The Voices – Dark Comedy | Rated R

A man accidentally kills his crush and ends up taking advice from his cat and dog.

The Unborn – Thriller | Rated PG-13

A woman is haunted by her unborn twin. But then, woah twist! Gotta watch it because I’m not giving it away.

The Lazarus Effect – Sci-Fi | Rated PG-13

An experiment gone right,Β then wrong.

The Babysitter – Dark Comedy | TV-MA

A good old fashioned sacrifice night goes array due to mostly pure luck, or unluck?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning – Slasher | Rated R

Dude in a mask kills people with a chainsaw.

Tucker & Dale VS Evil – Dark Comedy | Rated R

This is one of my favorites. Very funny, in a dark way. Tucker & Dale are the epitome of β€˜at the wrong place, at the wrong time’ coincidences.

The Collection – Slasher | Rated R

This is the sequel to The Collector and it is just as good! Gives Saw vibes without the game part.

As Above, So Below – Thriller | Rated R

While treasure hunting in the catacombs of Paris, a group of people finds themselves haunted trying to escape alive.

Open House – Thriller | Rated TV-MA

This one is mostly scary because of how real it can get and the ending is unexpected.

Van Helsing – Adventure | Rated PG-13

Vampire hunter.

Gerald’s Game – Thriller | Rated TV-MA

Sex game gone wrong on sooo many levels!

The Conjuring – Thriller | Rated R

Spirit, ghost haunting and *supposedly* based on true events.

The Signal – Sci-Fi | Rated PG-13

With this one, you think you got it figured out one minute and the next BAM, you don’t! Kind of leans towards the whole area 51 theme and then takes it up a level.

Cube – Sci-Fi | Rated R

I love this movie because it is different. People wake up trapped inside a sort of booby-trapped cube maze and have to figure out how to get out alive.

Chernobyl Diaries – Thriller | Rated R

An illegal tour through an abandoned city goes array.

Little Evil – Dark Comedy | Rated TV-MA

I see it as a funny version of The Omen.

$13 & under (for purchase only):

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter – Action | Rated R | $12.99

This and all Resident Evil movies are about a woman immune to a virus that turns people into zombies on a quest to shut down the company who created it in the first place. I recommend you watch them all.

Get Out – Thriller | Rated R | $9.99

I don’t think there’s a person who has not seen this movie, but if you’re one of them, you should jump on the wagon. This movie starts out one way and then next thing you know it’s not even about that anymore. A guy visits his girlfriend’s family and they like him a little too much.

Split | Thriller | Rated PG-13 | $9.99

A man with multiple personalities disorder abducts 3 girls and while they try to escape his personalities betray each other. Really great movie!

1408 – Thriller | Rated PG-13 | $8.99

Paranormal debunking author checks into 1408 to prove there’s nothing supernatural but then all his beliefs go out the window.

Horns – Fantasy | Rated R | $8.99

A man blamed of killing his girlfriend wakes up with horns (along with its powers) and sets off to find the actual killer.

IT – Thriller | Rated R | $7.99

Remake of the original IT, and if you haven’t seen either one, you should. A clown preys on children by using their fears.

$4 & under:

House of 1000 Corpses – Slasher | Rated R | $3.99

In case you didn’t know, Rob Zombie also directs films and this one happens to be the very first one. A group of teenagers set out to look for mythical Dr. Satan who turn out to be very real along with an entire family of serial killers.

Darkness Falls – Thriller | Rated PG-13 | $2.99

A dark take on the tooth fairy.

The Fourth Kind – Sci-Fi | Rated PG-13 | $2.99

Alien abduction. This movie goes from β€˜real’ interviews and footage to β€˜reenacted’ scenes.

Beetlejuice – Fantasy | Rated PG | $2.99

A spirit (Beetlegeuse) attempts to help a couple of ghosts haunting their own home to try to scare away new owners but actually makes things worse. This movie is more like a comedy.

Freddy VS Jason – Slasher | Rated R | $2.99

So Freddy Krueger teams up with Jason Voorhees and while that seemed to work up fear, Jason is not a team player and Freddy gets pissed.

Thirteen Ghosts – Thriller | Rated R | $2.99

A family inherits a fancy house from a relative who do not know what they are getting themselves into. The house works like a puzzle to keep the ghosts imprisoned within the rooms.

Legion – Fantasy | Rated R | $2.99

The apocalypse starts happening in the middle of nowhere and coincidentally humanity’s last hope is there so the Archangel shows up and must protect it at all costs.

Jennifer’s Body – Dark Comedy | Rated R | $2.99

Jennifer is the hot cheerleader who gets kidnapped and then sacrificed, which didn’t turn out so well since the sacrifice had to be a virgin. Turned into a demon Jennifer has to feed on humans to remain beautiful and stop deterioration.

Ghost Ship – Thriller | Rated R | $2.99

A ship is found on international waters and finders keepers. A group of people try to tow it and instead discover ghosts and gold. Surprise ending. Kind of.

Annabelle – Thriller | Rated R | $2.99

Yes, another possessed doll movie.

Drag Me To Hell – Thriller | Rated PG-13 | $2.99

A woman is cursed by an old woman and spends all her time trying to get the old woman to undo the curse. Unexpected ending.

Krampus – Dark Comedy | Rated R | $2.99

So Krampus is the opposite of Santa Claus. Be bad and Krampus will come for you.

The Cabin In The Woods – Thriller | Rated R | $2.99

A group of friends get away for a weekend at a cabin in the woods and strange things start to happen. At first, it seems like good old-fashioned haunting and then turns out to be much more complicated than that.

Silent Hill: Revelation – Thriller | Rated R | $2.99

Sequel to Silent Hill, this movie is actually better than the first one, but you should probably still watch both to get the whole picture. The gist of the story is that Silent Hill is actually a different realm that is inhabited by darkness.

So there you have it! Now you have plenty to watch throughout this wonderful spooky month. If you need help with your costumes, check out Costume Ideas for this Halloween!

**Please be aware that most of these titles are not suitable for children, especially the TV-MA and R rated. Don’t be fooled by the PG-13 ratings either and screen yourself first because I know I probably won’t let my future 13-year-old watch some of these! Haha

What are your favorite horror movies? Any not on the list that I should watch? Let me know in the comments!

Yeah, NO! I was scared just reading the titles, so I’m pretty sure I don’t want to watch them. LOL! But, absolutely thanks for sharing. I will share this list with my friends I know don’t mind paying to be scared.

Wow, that is quite a list you have there. I haven’t seen very many of those movies. I really enjoy horror/thrillers but my husband likes comedies so I don’t see as many anymore. On your list Thirteen ghosts is my favorite! My personal favorite movie is The Strangers (not the 2nd one though, thought that one was awful)! Thanks for the ideas on movies!
